Getting there
Kyobashi Stn (Ginza Line), 1 min walk
Masao Fukamachi was born in Tochigi in 1949 and began cooking at eighteen in Tempura to Washoku Yamanoue, the restaurant of the Hilltop Hotel in Ochanomizu. He became head of its Japanese kitchen at 27 and held the post for 34 years. In 2002, at 52, he opened his own place in Kyobashi, on the ground floor of an office building between Nihonbashi and Ginza. The Tabelog Award has listed it every year from 2019 through 2026 — Silver in 2019 and 2020, Bronze since — and it was named to the Tempura Hyakumeiten (Tabelog’s top-100 list) in 2022, 2023 and 2025. It holds One MICHELIN Star (MICHELIN Guide Japan 2026).
What you eat
Edo‑mae tempura in the classic line. Ingredients come from Toyosu market each morning and are fried in pure white sesame oil; the dipping sauce is made in house from bonito and kombu dashi with mirin and Shimane soy sauce. Two pots run at once, so each piece goes into the oil at the temperature it needs. At dinner there are three courses — tempura alone, sashimi with tempura, or the chef’s omakase — and lunch offers a shorter version of the same counter.
The booking reality
There are two dinner seatings, at 17:00 and 19:30, and lunch every open day. The house closes on Mondays and on the first, third and fifth Sundays of the month. On the first business day of each month the following month opens. Online, the official site takes requests through AutoReserve and Ikyu has switched to request bookings from October 2026 — neither is confirmed until the house replies. Ikyu asks for a mobile number as the contact; hotel and home numbers are declined.
Cancellation is charged in full — from the day before on Ikyu, and from two days before (five for parties of three or more) under the house’s own terms, so check which applies when you book. Children aged ten and up are welcome, each ordering a full adult course. There is no dress code, though the house asks guests to go light on perfume. A request that is not yet a reservation is exactly where a Japanese phone call helps — confirming the seating, the course and any allergy with the house — and that call is the one our desk makes.
Want classic Edo‑mae tempura from a master who spent half a century at the fryer, at a counter small enough that every piece passes straight from his chopsticks to your plate.
Free release-date alerts: the day before, on the morning of release day (08:00 JST) and about 30 minutes before when the time is known — or a weekly summary if the house opens a little every day.
Tempura Fukamachi: common questions
Can you book Tempura Fukamachi from abroad?
Yes, through our Tokyo desk. Phone in Japanese, or a booking request through the official site (via AutoReserve) or Ikyu, both confirmed later by the house. On the first business day of each month the following month opens. We call the restaurant for you, in Japanese, and the ¥6,000-per-seat fee is charged only if we confirm your table — no seat, no fee.
