Getting there
JR / Hanshin Motomachi (8–10 min on foot), Kencho-mae subway (5 min)
Masamichi Ueda was born on Awaji Island, started in kitchens at
sixteen, and spent nine years moving through restaurants — and, for
a month, a fishing boat — before opening this counter near
Motomachi station in 2018. His stated ambition is a “grand maison”
of sushi, and the room says so: a long counter of Tajima cypress,
eight seats, a team rather than a lone master. Tabelog has given the
house an Award Bronze every year from 2022 to 2026 and placed it on
its Sushi WEST 100 in 2022 and 2025; Gault&Millau scores it 16/20.
The fish is the argument — Ueda cooks from Hyogo’s own coasts, which
run from the Seto Inland Sea to the Sea of Japan.
What you eat
One omakase, ¥33,000 with tax, lunch and dinner alike. Awaji and
Akashi supply the sea bream and the octopus; the Harima Sea and the
northern ports of Hamasaka and Kasumi supply the rest — reviewers
mention fugu milt in winter, uni, and a raw conger that few counters
attempt. The tsumami carry the season, and the house’s own
signatures include an onion chawanmushi and grilled abalone. Diners
report around ¥45,000 a head with a couple of drinks. It is a room
of rules, stated plainly and enforced: no photographs or video, no
perfume, no smoking during the meal, no tank tops, shorts or sandals,
punctuality expected, and no children.
The booking reality
No release day, no lottery. TableCheck sells one to five seats
online for any of the three seatings — a card holds the table and
is charged only for late cancellation — Ikyu takes a request that
the house confirms within 72 hours, and the phone (078‑515‑6655, in
Japanese) does the rest; parties of five or more must call. The
lead time is real but not mythical: a reviewer in 2025 took a
weekend lunch three months out and noted that individual seats were
open a few months ahead; another found a weekday lunch online at
shorter notice, and the house’s own Tabelog note says same‑day
bookings are possible when a seat is free. The three seatings start
together — 12:00, 18:00 and 20:40 on weekdays and Saturdays, with a
17:00 dinner on Sundays — so arrive before the hour.
Two cautions. Cancellation charges start early and depend on the
channel: on TableCheck, 10% from the moment you book, 20% from three
weeks out, 50% from a week out and 100% from two days out; on Ikyu,
20% from 21 days out, 50% from 20 days and 100% from six days. And a table of
regulars is normal here, though first‑timers report being made
welcome. When our desk books, we call in Japanese, settle the
seating and the house’s conditions, and make sure the card on file
and the cancellation terms are understood before anything is
charged.
