Getting there
Kintetsu Nara, about 8 minutes on foot; 7–8 minutes from the Nara Hotel
Tsuruyoshi sits where the Shimomikado shopping arcade runs out and
Naramachi’s old lanes begin — a converted house rather than a grand
ryotei, with a counter, tatami rooms with sunken seating and a
couple of small private rooms. The master trained at a well‑known
house in Kanazawa, and it shows in the cooking’s loyalty to fish and
to beautiful tableware; a local Nara food guide names the Kanazawa house as
Tsurukō. Nara’s eaters have long treated it as the city’s serious
kaiseki address, and in 2026 Tabelog’s reviewers made it official:
The Tabelog Award 2026 Bronze, on top of a place in the Japanese
Cuisine WEST Top 100 for 2025.
What you eat
Seasonal kaiseki with the sea at its centre: a spring lunch has run
from bamboo shoot with sansho leaf through a clear crab‑dumpling
broth, sashimi of squid and sea bream, black cod grilled Rikyu‑style,
a simmered course of spring vegetables and yuba, and a bowl of
green‑pea rice, finishing — as the house always does — with kuzumochi
and matcha. Dinner reaches for nodoguro and sushi courses. Budgets
cluster around ¥20,000–30,000 at night, and lunch is markedly gentler;
the house does not publish a fixed course list, so we confirm prices
when we book.
The booking reality
There is no release day here. The house takes bookings by telephone
in Japanese on 0742‑26‑7798. Reviewers in 2026 report
booking by phone on the day itself, and when the main house is full
the house’s annex, Shimomikado Mizunoe, takes parties. Weekends and
holiday dinners go first — Nara fills with day‑trippers — so a
private room for two on a Saturday is the one thing to ask for early.
Cards are accepted; a room charge applies for the tatami rooms. Our
desk calls in Japanese and settles the course and the room in one
conversation.
Travelers who want a proper Nara kaiseki without a two‑month
campaign, and anyone walking Naramachi at noon who would rather sit
down to a real lunch than a tourist set.
Free release-date alerts: the day before, on the morning of release day (08:00 JST) and about 30 minutes before when the time is known — or a weekly summary if the house opens a little every day.
Tsuruyoshi: common questions
Can you book Tsuruyoshi from abroad?
Yes, through our Tokyo desk. Phone in Japanese; no release day. We call the restaurant for you, in Japanese, and the ¥6,000-per-seat fee is charged only if we confirm your table — no seat, no fee.
Some of these links are referral links: if you book through them we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Restaurants never pay us to be listed or ranked. Editorial policy
