Most great sushi asks you to come to the city. Sasamoto asks you to go to
the sea. At the far end of the Boso line in Kamogawa, this family counter
has built its name entirely on the fish landed along the coast outside its
door.
What you eat
The house signature is ganso yaki-zushi — its own original
grilled sushi, the skin side of local fish seared over Kamogawa charcoal
before it is pressed into nigiri, a technique you will not find on a Tokyo
counter. Around it runs a menu that changes with the Boso catch rather
than with a market list.
The room
Family-run since 1977, Sasamoto is larger than the city counters we
usually gather — a first-floor counter and tatami alcoves, with private
rooms upstairs for a few to twenty. It reads as a genuine seaside
destination, the kind of place a coastal drive is built around.
Getting in
Five minutes on foot from Awa-Kamogawa Station, roughly two hours from
Tokyo. Reservations are placed by phone or a Japanese-language site; the
day's last orders shift with what comes in off the boats.
